The Shape of a Journey with Dune Studio

For Downtown Design 2026, Dune Studio transforms Jotun's Journeys collection into an immersive architectural experience, where overlapping forms, shifting perspectives and carefully considered colour combinations invite visitors to explore the relationship between space, memory and personal identity.

Colour is often considered something that completes a space. But what happens when it becomes the starting point for the architecture itself?

For Dune Studio, this question shapes its installation for Jotun at Downtown Design 2026, interpreting the Journeys collection through movement, discovery and reflection.

"We wanted to explore Jotun's new collection through architecture, creating an introspective journey from the outside in," the studio explains.

"Inspired by the brand's 100-year history, the pavilion unfolds through overlapping layers, gradually revealing Jotun's identity, heritage and the harmony of its colour collections."

The circular pavilion, composed of overlapping curved walls at varying heights, unfolds progressively, revealing unexpected relationships between colours as visitors move through the space.

"Colour becomes the architecture itself, revealing new combinations and perspectives as visitors move through the space, reflecting Jotun's expertise in colour harmony."

This transformation reflects the ideas behind Journeys, where Memories, Discoveries and Experiences explore the influences shaping our relationship with colour. For Dune Studio, these themes become architectural layers, while Becoming represents their continuous evolution.

"Becoming represents this evolution, where every new perspective creates a different experience of colour."

Along the pavilion's outer edge, moments from Jotun's century of colour creation celebrate its heritage, while the journey leads towards a central space for pause and conversation.

Beyond the installation, three sculptural stations across Dubai Design District and specially designed buses extend the experience into the surrounding city.

“Colour becomes the common architectural language across all interventions," Dune Studio explains.

"Through geometric compositions, layered surfaces and playful forms, we created a cohesive identity that adapts to different scales, from the immersive pavilion to the urban stations and moving buses."

Ultimately, Journeys invites visitors to experience colour beyond decoration, discovering how it shapes spaces, emotions and memories, and encouraging a more personal connection with the colours surrounding us.
