The region’s leading handmade carpet house Iwan Maktabi will unveil a limited-edition collection of hand-knotted carpets by veteran Emirati artist Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim, who is a part of the UAE’s first generation of contemporary artists from the late 1980s. In close collaboration with Mohamed, several of his iconic paintings and drawings will be re-interpreted for the first-time as carpet art collectibles by Iwan Maktabi.
The exhibition at this year’s edition will also feature recent handmade creations launched as part of the brand’s two most prominent creative interventions: The Artists’ Carpets project and the ongoing program Terminal G – an initiative that presents contemporary Khaliji culture through the art of weaving carpets as a medium of expression. “Delights” by Saudi Prince artist Sultan Bin Fahad and “The Eye of the Beholder” by Noor Al Suwaidi are among the works specially curated for the fair.
As part of the carpet maker’s commitment to promoting Lebanese talent, the gallery will also include the poignant work of Marwan Sahmarani, “Crying Man”, an intricate carpet creation in wool. Iwan Maktabi’s offerings at Editions will be complemented with bespoke ceramic creations by Zein Daouk, Hala Matta, Rasha Nawwan and Marilyn Massoud, for an immersive and visually tactile experience at Downtown Editions.
