Exploring Dubai With Omar Al Gurg

For the few unfamiliar with the name, Omar Al Gurg is one of the region’s leading design voices and the founder of Dubai-based MODU Method. Over the years, his work has garnered global recognition for a uniquely playful yet purposeful approach, blending 1970s design cues with the region’s architectural heritage.

A few months ago, we asked him to create the perfect Dubai guide for all the design aficionados visiting the city during Design Week. The result is this list of 13 spots: an eclectic selection that offers a taste of Dubai’s many facets and will leave you eager to return and explore more.

Honeycomb Hi-Fi

A really cool space for folks to have good food, listen to some good music, and enjoy dinner in a speakeasy inspired space.

Lulu and the Beanstalk

Coffee shop during the day, and lounge at night, versatile space, lots of great furniture, wonderful vibe.

Bageri Form

Not too far from Downtown Design, and smack in the middle of D3. They have a pretty good breakfast there, I like their scrambled eggs the most, and some of their savoury pastries are delicious.

Al Serkal Avenue

There are so many wonderful galleries here if youˈre looking for art, and lots to explore! Iˈd recommend going in the morning and walking around.

Kokoro

Their Hand Rolls are delicious, if youˈre happy to stand in line for a little bit before grabbing a bite, this place is definitely worth a visit.

Mimi Kakushi

If youˈre looking for more of a fancy dinner, I highly recommend Mimi Kakushi. The interiors are great, at any time of the day, and their Japanese food is delicious.

Onda

If youˈre into matcha and fancy red couches and unconventional seating, Onda is the place to be. Theyˈre a replenishment bar that has food options too, Itˈs great if you like a quick catch up in a funky space.

Piehaus

New space in Al Serkal, delicious pies.

Al Mallah Dhiyafa

If youˈve had a little too much fun during design week, and like lots of garlic, Iˈd recommend their chicken shawarma.

Dampa Seafood Grill

If you really want to get your hands dirty, and want to venture out into another side of Dubai, head over to Dampa for the most delicious shell out youˈve ever had. Go hungry, and donˈt be shy.

Kite Beach

If youˈre a healthy person and enjoy running, walking, or cycling, Kite Beach has a great track. The atmosphere there is refreshing, and itˈll really set the mood for the rest of your day.

Bvlgari Spa

If you really like to splurge, book a massage at the Bvlgari, enjoy their facilities, and take it easy after a long week of socialising and running around.
