A Moment Beneath the Stars with Preciosa

It is from this heritage that Preciosa Lighting draws its identity, carrying forward generations of knowledge while continuously exploring new possibilities for one of design's most evocative materials.
Rooted in the Czech Republic's Crystal Valley, a region synonymous with the art of Bohemian crystal, Preciosa brings together traditional glassmaking techniques and contemporary technology to create lighting that moves beyond function. From hand-blown crystal elements to large-scale architectural installations, its work reflects an understanding of light not simply as a means of illumination, but as something capable of shaping atmosphere, emotion and the experience of a space.
While traditional chandeliers form an important part of this heritage, Preciosa's contemporary portfolio reveals a far broader exploration of the possibilities of glass and light. Working alongside architects and designers internationally, the brand develops bespoke installations that respond to the identity of a space, often becoming sculptural features as significant as the architecture surrounding them.
At London's Mandarin Oriental Mayfair, an expansive composition of 851 raw crystal elements brings an organic rhythm to the hotel's interior, echoing the natural qualities of the materials around it. At sea, a collaboration with design studio Jouin Manku for the award-winning superyacht Kenshō introduced 66 bespoke lighting pieces, designed to bring warmth and intimacy to an environment defined by movement and the surrounding ocean.
Closer to home, Preciosa's Lava Trees at Atlantis The Royal in Dubai demonstrate how light can transform scale and atmosphere, capturing the movement and intensity of molten lava through monumental sculptural glass forms.

Despite their different settings, these projects share an underlying sensibility: the belief that lighting can become an experience in itself.
Central to this approach is the relationship between artistic imagination and the precision of making. Within Preciosa's workshops, traditional glassblowing and cutting techniques exist alongside digital modelling, advanced engineering and lighting technology. The result is a practice that continuously challenges the possibilities of crystal while preserving the individuality and expertise of the hands that shape it.
This November, Preciosa brings that philosophy to Downtown Design 2026 through Crystal Bicones: A Sky of Stories, an immersive installation that explores the relationship between light, perspective and imagination.
Inspired by the timeless experience of looking towards the night sky, the presentation transforms 200 handcrafted crystal bicones into a contemporary constellation. Different sizes, decorative cuts and finishes create an intricate landscape overhead, while dynamic lighting scenes continually shift the character and atmosphere of the composition.
Yet rather than approaching the installation as something to be admired from a distance, visitors are invited to recline beneath it, allowing themselves a moment of stillness within the movement of the fair.
The experience offers an unexpected perspective on the latest Signature Design, presented physically for the first time following its digital introduction earlier this year. Each crystal bicone is hand-blown and meticulously hand-cut in Bohemia, its individual character becoming part of a larger expression shaped through repetition, scale and light.
In bringing these elements together, Preciosa explores the endless possibilities of a single form while reminding us that even the most technically accomplished design can begin with a simple human emotion: wonder.
As the crystals come alive overhead, A Sky of Stories offers something increasingly rare. A space where the purpose of light is not simply to illuminate what surrounds us, but to invite us to experience it differently.
